Reflection 1 – My Poetic Eyes

I decided to focus ‘My Poetic Eyes’ on The London Riots of 2011 because of what it did to my area and places near my home. I knew people that took part in the riots. Walthamstow, where I’m from wasn’t hit that badly in comparison to Tottenham.

When constructing my poem I wanted to include a common theme in the form of a single line, which ended up being ‘Tottenham, Croydon and Hackney are on fire’, because they literally were and metaphorically they were on fire, shops, cars even buses in some parts were getting destroyed, every thing and any thing was a target of destruction. I wanted to source powerful clips that showed the extent of the destruction to make people realize how bad it was but I was weary of not re-iterating what the media had done and blame ‘the youth of London’ for the riots, truth be told, people old as 50 were arrested during the riots, so instead of saying what types of people were the cause of this I wanted to approach why the riots happened from a sociological perspective because that’s who was involved in the riots, all of society, people from different walks of life representing their different part of society. The lines ‘Marxists may argue this was the working class fighting the shackles of the system, Functionalists may argue rioting happened because the system failed’, thus looking at society on a macro scare rather than what the media did and targeted young males on a micro scale.

I like the fact that my images are powerful enough to get my point across and in some parts I tried to match this up with the poem. However, I do believe I could of changed my voice and recited the poem in a more emotional manor, because my voice does sound slightly emotionless which is not what I wanted put across, I do care and did care that the riots were happening. Image

My Poetic eyes is a 1 minute video that I have produced. The concept behind the video is me voicing my personal opinion on a social problem/topic via poetry and a montage of different video clips to illustrate what my poem is about.
